What is SmartSight?

SmartSight is an advanced method of correcting visual defects based on lenticular extraction.
This procedure, also known as lenticular extraction or LE, enables the precise and minimally invasive removal of a tiny lens segment (lenticule) from the cornea.
The refractive power of the eye is altered in order to correct vision defects such as short-sightedness and astigmatism.
SmartSight is characterized by its high accuracy and gentle approach, which allows for faster healing and less post-operative discomfort compared to traditional methods such as LASIK or PRK.
This technique offers patients a safe and effective alternative to achieve a lasting improvement in their quality of vision.

SmartSight lenticule extraction Suitability criteria:

Specific diopter limits apply to SmartSight Laser Eye Surgery lenticule extraction to ensure optimal results:

  • Short-sightedness (myopia): up to -10 diopters
  • Astigmatism: up to -5 diopters

General requirements

In addition to the diopter limits, there are other important criteria that must be met in order to be considered as a suitable candidate for SmartSight:

  • Age: At least 18 years old
  • Stable vision: No significant changes in visual acuity in the last 12 months
  • Healthy cornea: Sufficient thickness and no diseases or injuries
  • General eye health: No serious eye diseases such as glaucoma or cataracts
  • General health: No systemic diseases that could affect healing, such as uncontrolled diabetes or autoimmune diseases

Farsightedness, also known as hyperopia, cannot be corrected with SmartSight technology because this method was developed specifically for the treatment of short-sightedness and astigmatism.
When correcting long-sightedness, deeper layers of the cornea need to be worked on, which is not possible with the lenticule extraction technique.

The Schwind ATOS laser: state-of-the-art technology for the best view

Was ist Weitsichtigkeit

At the heart of SmartSight laser technology is the Schwind ATOS femtosecond laser, which is equipped with the latest technology to make treatment as safe and precise as possible.
This laser offers a range of outstanding features that make it a first-class choice for laser eye surgery:

  • Real-time pupil detection (eye tracking): The Schwind ATOS laser uses advanced eye tracking technology that monitors and adjusts the position of the pupil in real time.
This ensures maximum precision during the procedure and minimizes the risk of deviations.
  • Cyclotorsion compensation: This system automatically corrects any rotational movements of the eye to ensure that the astigmatism is optimally treated.
Adjustment during the procedure ensures precise correction, leading to better visual results.

Our patients achieve so much more once they attain high-definition vision without glasses and contacts

  • Automated centering: The Schwind ATOS laser has an automated centering function that ensures that the lenticule is positioned exactly along the visual axis.
This guarantees optimal placement and contributes to the accuracy and efficiency of the procedure.
  • Integrated microscope: Equipped with an integrated microscope, the Schwind ATOS laser facilitates the removal of the lenticule through tiny incisions of around 2.5 to 3 mm. This minimization of the incision size contributes to faster healing and less post-operative discomfort.

Overview of the SmartSight method
SmartSight: minimally invasive lenticule extraction

SmartSight is a modern laser eye procedure for the refractive correction of myopia and astigmatism without creating a corneal flap.
FLAP.
This further development of lenticule extraction is characterized by intelligent eye tracking with pupil recognition and cyclotorsion compensation.
The SCHWIND ATOS femtosecond laser enables minimally invasive lenticule extraction and flap creation with a single device.
The smart system enables precise centering of the patient’s eye along the visual axis with pupil detection and cyclotorsion compensation.
Thanks to the quick system test, the laser is ready for use within a short time.
The compact device design is consistently geared towards flexibility and efficiency in clinical use.

SmartSight suitability criteria

The Lentilelextraktion SmartSight laser eye surgery method is only used for short-sighted patients.
Lentile extraction has been on the market since 2011 (application: short-sightedness -0.5 to -10.0 diopters and a corneal curvature of up to -5.0 diopters) However, if these criteria are not met, the same results are generally achieved with femto-LASIK surgery.   With the “keyhole method”, a flap (corneal cover) is no longer created and folded away – the procedure is performed through a tiny incision in the cornea and is therefore minimally invasive. This means that the cornea is interfered with as little as possible and the healing process is therefore very short. The femtosecond laser marks the tissue that is to be removed to improve vision.
Only the femtosecond laser is used.
This method is relatively new and is only used in a few laser eye clinics worldwide.

Advantages and disadvantages of SmartSight
The advantages of SmartSight lenticel extraction:
  • Patients have significantly less eye dryness compared to all other laser eye surgery methods
  • Patients have significantly less light sensitivity (e.g. halos) compared to all other laser eye methods
  • Modern small incision method in eye laser technology – comparable with laparascopic surgery!
  • The procedure does not require the application of a flap, as is the case with other laser treatment methods – so nothing can shift!
  • We can correct the view through a tiny keyhole opening (2.5-3.0 mm)
  • We can perform the entire procedure in one step with a laser
  • SmartSight can correct short-sightedness down to -10 diopters.
  • Recovery is very fast.
Just 1-2 days later, patients can do sport and women can apply make-up
The disadvantages of lenticel extraction
  • Long-term studies only since 2011: (The procedure has only been on the market since 2011)
  • Only short-sightedness and astigmatism can be treated(long-sightedness in the near future), presbyopia in the form of monovision.
  • No follow-up treatment possible with the same method: Correction of the result as a repeat lenticule extraction is not possible.
Any follow-up treatment would be possible using other treatment methods.
SmartSight risks
Risks:
  • With SmartSight there is no flap, so all flap-related complications are eliminated
  • The risk of dry eye is lower compared to Femto-LASIK
  • Thanks to modern laser eye profiles, the risk of halos/glare/starbursts is extremely low
  • Full vision recovery can take up to 1 month.
SmartSight options and alternatives
Micro incision technology – minimally invasive and gentle

With SmartSight, the SCHWIND ATOS femtosecond laser forms a pre-calculated lenticule in the intrastromal tissue of the cornea and prepares small, peripheral incisions in the uppermost corneal layer as a lenticule access.
After the laser procedure, the lenticule is detached through the small access points.
The incisions allow the eye surgeon to remove the lenticule easily and with a view through the microscope integrated in the SCHWIND ATOS.
SmartSight completely dispenses with a corneal flap and there is no laser ablation as with the excimer laser.
